Professional musician; was the lead trumpeter of
the most popular dance band in Ghana (arguably
also in Africa) in the 60s - the Uhuru
Professional Dance Band.
And later the Band Leader of the Expensive
Stars, the house band of Star Hotel, one of the
premier hotels in Accra.
Kpakpo left for
the US in the 70s, lived in Los Angeles, CA, and
worked with the United States Postal Services.
He never left the music field but continued to
perform on a part-time basis; his favorite
instruments being the flugelhorn and the
trumpet.
His biggest musical break was in 2006 when he
was to perform on the world stage, the Hollywood
Bowl, Los Angeles, USA.
The performance was billed as a Jazz/Highlife
Fusion concert, with Kpakpo in the lead.
It was to feature a cross-session of seasoned
musicians in the US and Africa. Teddy Osei
and Mac Tonto (of Osibisa fame), Eddie Quansah,
and others were part of the fusion band.
Just days before the concert, Janet, Kpakpo's
wife, had a cardiac arrest and died as a result.
And the concert was called off.
